Property Amenities
The presence of two beaches offers sunbathers both
morning and afternoon sun. The morning beach runs a quarter-mile
on the Caribbean. The afternoon beach fronts the lagoon that is
located between Cancun Island and the mainland. Both offer
padded lounge chairs and thatched-roof palapas. The sea
is flat enough for languid paddling and snorkeling but usually
provides enough foamy beach waves to thrill children. For
ecological reasons, swimming is not recommended in the lagoon.
However, there are rental kayaks and pedal boats for exploring
the lagoon.
Several levels of terra-cotta-colored
sundeck surround the main pool, which is large enough for
swimming laps. The upper-level sundeck includes four small,
diamond-shaped pools, two shallow enough for children. One has a
swim-up bench along the Sunrise Bar.
Located on the lagoon beach is a temazcal, or Mayan
bath. Volcanic stones inside the stucco hut are heated so guests
sweat out impurities while breathing in pleasant aromas and
relaxing to music. Also on the lagoon beach, five interlocked
spas offer cool-water repose.
Insider tip: At night, a thatched lifeguard shack on
the beach makes a romantic hideaway for enjoying moonlight on
the Caribbean. Calling out "Hello?" before ascending
the ladder is recommended.
On the lagoon side, a beach hut serves
as headquarters for the Westin Kids' Club, a complimentary,
supervised activities program for ages 4–12. Complimentary
shuttle service runs every 30 minutes to the Westin's sister
hotel, Sheraton Cancun Resort & Towers, which is situated
across the street from a stylish shopping center and a 15-minute
stroll from Cancun Island's nightlife, shopping, and dining
center.
A dazzling example of Mexi-Caribe architecture,
the 385-room, six-floor hotel displays a light-colored
rough-concrete exterior. Bright-pink and cool-blue accents recur
throughout the hotel. Monumental touches pop up, such as an
enormous white-concrete fruit in the main restaurant, huge balls
around the pool, and random stands of colored columns. The hotel
is suffused with cheerful, bilingual Mexican hospitality. A
health-and-beauty spa includes men's and women's sections with
lockers, steam rooms, saunas, and rooms for massage and body
wraps. A 15-foot-diameter spa serves both sexes, as does a
mirrored aerobics room and an exercise area containing machines
and free weights. Next to the spa, two rooftop tennis courts are
lighted for night play and surfaced in carpet and sand. Like all
major Cancun hotels, the Westin Regina is equipped with a
water-purification system.
